Adjustment Wheel
Online Wellness Gateway
SMG Health have developed the Adjustment Wheel in response to the increasing need for employees and their family members to make the necessary adjustments to the rapidly changing demands and challenges imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. Importantly ‘The Wheel’ is individualised in its design as we acknowledge that each person requires different adjustments that will match their own experience, readiness to change, skills and capacity. In this way, individuals can use ‘The Wheel’ to make small incremental changes to achieve significant outcomes over time that will provide for more control over their day to day activities.
This control, and bringing some certainty into a very uncertain environment, provides for a greater degree of emotional stability even in difficult times. So why not get started today?

Action Plan
Based on your self-assessment of the SMG Health Adjustment Wheel, we suggest the following action plan.
You are far more likely to make successful adjustments by focusing on one dimension at a time. We recommend you only work on your top dimension first, and once you have successfully made that adjustment, move onto your second dimension.

Commuting
With the advent of the pandemic, concerns have been raised about the potential spread of COVID-19 when commuting to work on public transport due to the difficulty of distancing. For many this is the only way for them to get to work. There are a range of ways to mitigate the risk but that may require significant changes to how you have commuted in the past.
Download ListenPhysical Distancing
Due to the need to protect ourselves from COVID-19 all the health advice is recommending distancing as an important protective strategy. This is often difficult for some due to our past habits both at work, home, and in the broader community. Assess how you feel you are managing this important dimension and if you believe that some adjustments are necessary tap into ‘The Wheel’ and develop a plan.
Download ListenCommunication
Inherent in human nature is the need to communicate. Traditionally, particularly at work, this has been through face to face interaction in the workplace. For many this is currently not possible due to remote working, and for some even meeting with family and friends is difficult due to pandemic restrictions. This inability to easily communicate with relevant others has created significant difficulty and emotional distress for many people, and requires (for some) major adjustments to how they will communicate throughout the remainder of the pandemic.
Download ListenPhysical Health
Since the advent of the pandemic, many significant changes across our society have impacted how we maintain our physical health. These include; less frequent visits to our GP, delays in getting regular checks such as blood tests and specialist checks ups, rescheduling elective surgery, and cancelling our regular fitness classes, to restrictions on easily accessible fresh fruit and vegetables. In addition, the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on one’s mental health has the potential to adversely affect our physical health through increased stress, feelings of apathy, fatigue, anxiety etc.
Download ListenFinancial
For many employees the pandemic has already caused a reduction in weekly hours worked. However the uncertainty as to when the pandemic and associated restrictions will end has created increasing anxiety about one’s job and the subsequent impact on their financial commitments. While we can’t control the pandemic, we can develop contingencies for a range of potential financial outcomes. While reduced financial security is not optimal, making realistic plans to manage possible impacts will create some personal control over the actions you can take.
Download ListenSocial Engagement
Our hobbies, sporting and cultural interests, friends and relations visitation, and a range of recreational activities have been disrupted by the pandemic. This has prompted many of us to look at new and innovative ways of continuing to engage is these activities and/or replacing them with new interests to maintain our work life balance. Rather than waiting to the end of the pandemic to resume these activities consider developing a plan to create your ‘new normal.’
Download ListenCOVID19 Safe Practices
While governments and health authorities provide daily updates as to what we should wear at work, home, commuting, and engaging in leisure activities to protect ourselves and others, many find this communication confusing and at times ambiguous. If you are feeling confused or are unsure about protective equipment such as masks, use the Adjustment Wheel to assist in providing some clarity and a greater level of comfort in what you need to do.
Download ListenCOVID19 Fatigue
With the ongoing pandemic, with no clear end in sight, on and off again restrictions, no defined roadmap for the availability of a COVID-19 vaccine, increasingly people are becoming frustrated, disillusioned, at times angry, and tired of the constant barrage of disappointing news. The result is COVID fatigue and unless understood can lead to the development of mental health issues. The Adjustment Wheel has some useful tips and information that may assist in combatting this.
Download ListenRemote Working
The inability to communicate with our colleagues and customers in the office and at face to face meetings has become limited. While some have adapted well to a different communicative approach others, are quite challenged by all communication being online or telephonic. Working totally remotely requires a significant adaption due to its impact on customer service, business development, decision making, planning, performance management etc. While online communication will never replace the valuable interaction of face to face interaction, for many it is currently the ‘new normal.’ The Adjustment Wheel’ can assist in making the most out of this adaptation.
Download ListenAnxiety
The most widespread emotional impact from the coronavirus pandemic is increasing anxiety based on the lack of certainty across many of the traditional day to day activities we have been successfully engaging with for years. This dimension is linked to all other dimensions and being able to better manage your anxiety will assist you in better managing many of the other impacts. The Adjustment Wheel will certainly assist.
